Ottawa Redblacks sign former Hamilton Tiger-Cats and XFL receiver Jalen Saunders

Going through this years off-season it was questioned many times if the Redblacks would attack their receiving core. Coming off a 3-15 season in 2019 where they only had one receiver go over 1,000 yards many would’ve thought they needed to bring in a big name receiver. With Derel Walker still available 2 months after free agency opened it makes Redblacks fans wonder why they wouldn’t try to bring him in for cheap but at the end of the day they did not. The Redblacks ended up signing Jalen Saunders who was made a free agent after the XFL suspended their operations.

If you were to look onto an article posted earlier last week about the XFL players going into free agency, Saunders was one of the group of players I thought the Redblacks would have eyes on. Nearly predicting the deal, I’m excited to have him on our receiving core alongside RJ Harris and veteran Brad Sinopoli.

For many, Saunders is a new name but after spending a few seasons bouncing off NFL teams he ended up putting up big numbers for the Tiger-Cats in the CFL. In 2017 he had over 1,000 yards and in 2018 he had over 700 yards which added to his 1,909 yards and 6 touchdowns in the CFL.

If he is given a similar role in the Redblacks offense he can end up being a very good receiver in Ottawa.
